Mike Hawthorn shone in practice, gaining a front-row start for his little Cooper-Bristol and fighting valiantly with the Ferraris for five laps before they resumed their usual formation. Alberto Ascari led Nino Farina and Luigi Villoresi home in another Ferrari procession, with Hawthorn gaining 4th. Stirling Moss got up as high as 7th in the ERA before having to retire.
